Russell Hicks
• Her specialty is children’s psychiatry. Her office walls are covered with children’s art; crayons and markers abound; and toys may sometimes be seen. • She has had a lengthy and successful history at KP. This is both important and rare. I believe that Behavioral Medicine has suffered from a rather high turnover rate. If you want someone who will be there for you today, next year, and five years from now, she should be on your short list. • Although English is her second language, she is totally fluent, and understands the culture and customs of our community. • She considers the “whole patient”. In my case, that means paying attention to sleep apnea, diabetes, and degenerative disc disease. She enjoys a superior reputation among KP staff and she has engendered supportive relationships with my PCP (primary care physician) and other specialists. • I have enjoyed amazingly swift responses to e-mail questions and concerns (sometimes here hours). This is very important, because scheduling a routine visit usually requires waiting for weeks. She is heavily booked. Nevertheless, when I have a consult with her I have never felt that she was rushing me—I had her total and compassionate attention. That’s a big deal. • Despite the pace of her practice, she is an attentive listener, with whom a caring and supportive doctor-patient relationship is readily established. • She knows how to “work the system” with regard to treatment alternatives, especially with regard to psychotropic medications (“the meds”). She explains alternatives, we discuss benefits and challenges, and we agree upon a course of therapy—which can readily be altered by e-mail based upon my practical response to the same. • If you are seeking: (a) competency; (b) compassion; and (c) longevity, I recommend Dr. Sahami without any reservations.
