Dear Dr. Roberts,Hi I used to run cross country and track in high shcool, and was doing pretty well except for this pain on the outside of my lower leg at the end of every season. I had my coaches tell me to ice it or that it was part of my achilles tendon and that all i needed to do was stretch it. After every season we would take a two week break and start running again and it didn't hurt so i thought it was one of those my legs are tired because its one of those end of the season pains we all get. When I got to college the same thing started happening and i just thought i could take my break and be all better, but it started getting a lot worse. I went to the athletic trainers and they thought that I must have had lots of scar tissue so they gave me friction massages at my tender spot, that made the pain a lot worse. They decided to have an x-ray taken of my tibula and fibula to find out that my fibula was twice as big as it should have been. By the size of the callous it was determined that I had a really old stress fracture that kept trying to heal and was unsuccessful for at least 3 years. They put me in a walking boot, which didn't seem to do anything, they had me use crutches for 3 weeks, which did a little, and then back in the boot for another 3 months until it felt like my calf muscle was going away and that made it feel worse. I've gotten MRI's that indicate I was healing up until last year but more recently the pain has gotten worse. When I found out about this it was my freshman year of college and now i graduated. I eat well i have enough calcium, I don't run on it, and I would like to know if you have any other suggestions of what I can do. I know this email is really long, I just hope you can get to it. Please help me out, I really wanted to run again. This has been going on for 8 years, and the pain has subsided, but has not totally gone away.Thank you very much,Laura
